HOT OR NOT: THE MARCH THRU ATLANTA

GREETINGS FROM SW OKLAHOMA:

WELL, WHAT WE SAW TODAY MAY NOT HAVE BEEN PRETTY BUT IT WAS EXCITING AND WHAT WE SAW FROM CARL EDWARDS MIGHT HAVE NOT BEEN PRETTY, BUT THAT IS WHAT THE FANS SAID THEY WANTED, SO THERE YOU GO. KNOWING THAT WHAT WE SAW COULD HAVE RESULTED IN DEATH OR SERIOUS INJURY, MAYBE WE NEED TO BE A LITTLE MORE CAREFUL ABOUT WHAT WE ASK FOR, CAUSE WE MIGHT JUST GET MORE THEN WE ASK FOR. DON'T GET ME WRONG I LOVE TO SEE EXCITMENT AND BUMPING AND BANGING BUT WHAT CARL DID WAS WRONG, BUT NOT ANYMORE WRONG THEN A FEW OF THE THINGS THAT DALE SR. DID DURING HIS CAREER SO RIGHT, WRONG, OR OTHERWISE CARL WILL STAY AS ONE OF MY FAVORITE DRIVERS. ENOUGH PREACHING AND ON TO HOW I SAW THE RACE.

NOT:

1. ROBBY GORDON: THE FIRST TO FALL IN THE MARCH. ROBBY SO NEEDS TO GET OUT OF NASCAR AND STICK TO OFF-ROAD AND CROSS COUNTRY RACING, AT LEAST HE WOULD HAVE PLENTY OF ROOM WHEN HE SPINS TO NOT DO ANY DAMAGE TO HIS CAR. HIS LAST NAME MIGHT BE GORDON, BUT IT AIN'T JEFF AND I DON'T FIGURE HE HAS THE COINS TO KEEP REPLACING CARS ON A WEEKLY BASIS.

2. BRAD KESELOWSKI: THIS BOY SURE NEEDS TO STILL BE IN NATIONWIDE OR MAYBE GO KARTS. HE MAY THINK HIS CRAP DON'T STINK, BUT I HAVE NEWS FOR HIM, HE SMELLS UP THE WHOLE RACE TRACK. BUT I HAVE AN IDEA THAT HE IS IN FOR A VERY LONG SEASON WITH MORE HARD KNOCKS THEN A SNARE DRUM IN A HEAVY METAL BAND.

3. DAVID REGAN: GEE GUYS, DON'T PUT ME ON T.V. AGAIN, DAVID WAS RUNNING PRETTY GOOD, HE GETS ON TV AND THE GUYS TALK ABOUT HIM AND BEFORE THEY PULL OFF THE CAMERA HE BLOWS A TIRE, HITS THE WALL AND PRETTY MUCH DID IN HIS DAY EARLY. HE STARTED 17TH AND FINISHED 37TH. IF THEY WERE MAKING STONE SOUP IN ATLANTA TODAY DAVID COULD HAVE SERVED AS THE STONE CAUSE HE DROPPED LIKE A ROCK.

4. HENDRICKS TIRE PROBLEMS: I'M NOT SMART ENOUGH TO UNDERSTAND JUST WHAT THE PROBLEM WAS, BUT IT SURE AFFECTED PRETTY MUCH EVERY HENDRICK RELATED CAR TODAY. WHEN IT FIRST HAPPENED I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST THE JR. WE HAVE COME TO KNOW AND DREAD, BUT THEN IT SEEMED TO HIT EVERY CAR CONNECTED TO HENDRICKS IN ANYWAY.

5. CARL EDWARDS: WELL, I GUESS EVEN OPIE CAN LOSE HIS COOL ONCE IN AWHILE, BUT THERE WAS NO CALL FOR WHAT HAPPENED. WHATEVER NASCAR DOES I AM AFRAID THAT CARL DESERVES IT. HIS ACTIONS TODAY REALLY HAD AN EFFECT ON THE OUTCOME OF THE RACE AND MAY WELL HAVE EFFECTS ON NASCAR'S ACTIONS FOR LONG INTO THE FUTURE. BESIDES CARL SHOULD KNOW BY NOW THAT WHOEVER HITS BACK IS ALWAYS THE ONE THAT GOES TO THE PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE AND CATCHES THE FLACK.

HOT:

5. DAVID GILLILAND: DAVID STARTED 37TH AND FINISHED 26TH, NOT ANYTHING EARTH SHATTERING ABOUT THAT , BUT HE STAYED OUT OF THE WAY ON THE TRACK AND IN THE PITS TO MAKE SURE HE HAD NO NEGITIVE INFLUENCE ON THE RACE, WITH THAT TYPE OF ATTITUDE I THINK I MIGHT JUST HAVE TO START ROOTING FOR HIM JUST A LITTLE BIT.

4. STEVE ADDINGTON: IT APPEARS THAT STEVE WAS JUST THE GLUE THAT THE "BREW CREW" NEEDED TO HOLD THEM TOGETHER. STEVE APPEARS TO BE VERY CALM AND LAID BACK BUT I HAVE A FEELING THAT BEHIND THE DOORS OF THE SHOP HE IS TOUGH AS NAILS AND MORE HARD HEADED THEN KURT, SO I THINK THEY MAY MAKE THE PERFECT TEAM, ONLY TIME WILL TELL BUT THEY SURE SEEM TO BE OFF TO A GREAT START.

3. JUAN MONTOYA: JUAN STARTED 3RH AND FINISHED IN THE SAME PLACE, DOESN'T SOUND LIKE MUCH OF A DAY, BUT JUAN WAS RIGHT IN THE THICK OF THINGS FROM START TO FINISH. TAKE AWAY THE CARL AND BRAD SHOW AND I THINK JUAN GETS HIS FIRST OVAL TRACK WIN. WITH SOME OF THE THINGS THAT HAVE KEPT HIM FROM WINNING ALREADY IT MAKES ME WONDER IF THE RACING GODS HAVE DECIDED THAT THEY ARE GONNA LET HIM GET JUST SO CLOSE THAT HE CAN TASTE THAT WIN, BUT NEVER GET TO SAVOR IT LIKE A GOOD MEAL.

2. MATT KENSETH: MATT STARTED 14TH AND WORKED HIS MAGIC ALL THE WAY TO 2ND BEFORE THE RACE WAS OVER. MATT SO MUCH REMINDS ME OF A GHOST, YOU DON'T SEE HIM AND YOU DON'T SEE HIM AND THEN "POOF" THERE HE IS. HE CURRENTLY STNADS 2ND IN THE STANDINGS AND WHILE IT MAY BE WAY EARLY TO THINK, I DON'T THINK WE ARE GONNA SEE A REPEAT OF LAST YEAR AND IN THE END MATT WILL BE THERE.

1. KURT BUSCH: KURT STARTED 11TH TODAY AND WITH THE HELP OF THE "BREW CREW" AND STEVE ADDINGTON HE RAN ONE OF THE BEST RACES OF HIS CAREER. KURT HAS BEEN ABLE TO HARNESS HIS URGE TO WIN AND TEMPER IT WITH A LITTLE HUMILITY AND GRACIOUSNESS TO BECOME ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENT DRIVERS ON THE CIRCUIT TODAY. LOOK FOR HIM TO BE IN THE TOP 5 WHEN ALL IS SAID AND DONE THIS SEASON.

PAUL MENARD AND A.J. ALLMENDINGER BOTH HAD GOOD RACES TODAY BUT WE WILL JUST HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE IF THEIR ABILITY AND GOOD FORTUNE HOLD OUT. THIS IS HOW I SAW THE RACE AND A DO HOPE AT LEAST A FEW AGREE, BUT EITHER WAY CHIME IN AND LET ME KNOW WHAT YOU THINK.

THAT'S MY OPINION - WHAT'S YOURS

  1. Great post, Gunny! Glad for Kasey, wish Joey could have had a better day.

  2. What exactly did Brad do? He never slid up into Mr. Ed. During the replay, it was clear as day that Brads car stuck to the yellow line when contact was made. When this "Have at it" rule change was made, I think Nascar thought that drivers would use common sense and not abuse it, but now we know better. Nascar needs to make an example out of Carl. Kevin Harvick was parked at Martinsville for the Nextel Cup race a few years ago because he deliberately took out one of Joe Gibbs' trucks during a Craftsman Truck race. They should do the same to Mr. Ed.

  3. ATHENS,

THANKS FOR STOPPING BY, KASEY MIGHT HAVE HAD A BETTER DAY WITHOUT THE RESTARTS AND JOEY SORT OF GOT HIS DAY WIPED OUT EARLY IN THE DAY, JUST GLAD HE GOT TO LIMP TO THE END.

  4. STEVE:

WELL I GUESS IT IS ALL IN HOW YOU SAW IT, TO ME BRAD TOOK ANOTHER SHOT AT CARL, FOR THE 3RD TIME IN 2 YEARS I DO BELIEVE, BUT I AGREE THAT CARL TOOK THE WRONG ROAD IN PAYBACK AND WHATEVER NASCAR DOES WILL SERVE CARL RIGHT, AND NO THE DRIVERS ARE NOT GONNA USE COMMON SENSE THEY ARE GONNA PUSH JUST AS FAR AS THEY CAN GET, AND YOU KNOW IT.

I DO THINK THAT HAD CARL NOT BEEN DOWN 130 SOME ODD LAPS DOWN AND HAD NOT FLIPPED THE 12 VERY LITTLE IF ANYTHING WOULD HAVE BEEN SAID.
LET'S JUST HOPE THAT ALL OF THEM LEARN A LITTLE FROM THE WRECK AND THE PUNISHMENT THAT IS DEALT OUT.

  5. Gunaquat, good Hot or Not as usual. I think had Edwards been running 7th and not over 100 laps down, nothing would have been said, other than "incidental contact." I called for a 100-point penalty and a one-race suspension and forfeiture of this race's purse for Edwards in my Good Bad and Ugly post.

  6. And as an aside, how about Kevin Harvick finishing 9th after starting 36th and being a lap down with 100 to go? By all rights, he should have lost his points lead but was able to keep it. He and the 29 crew made chicken salad out of chicken you-know-what.

  7. JON:

YOU ARE RIGHT ON BOTH POINTS AND I FIGURE CARL WILL GET AT LEAST THAT AND MAYBE MORE. AS FAR AS KEVIN I SORT OF WISH THERE HAD BEEN A FEW MORE LAPS WE MIGHT HAVE SEEN HIM LEADING THE PACK, YEP CHICKEN SALAD IS SO MUCH BETTER THEN CHICKEN ----.

  8. Hot - Gunny for not using 'Pablo' when mentioning Juan. Hurrah, someone with common sense at last! :)

Not - HMS and their related teams...whatever you were doing with your setups screwed up the tyres, nothing to do with Goodyear.

  9. TEZ:

I GUESS THIS IS SORT OF SILLY BUT I NEVER USE MY MIDDLE NAME SO I DIDN'T SEE ANY REASON TO USE HIS. JUST ONE OF MY QUIRKS THAT TURNED OUT TO BE LUCK THIS TIME.

I THINK I COVERED TAHT IN THE ONE CALLED TIRE PROBLEMS, BUT TO BE SURE DIDN'T INTEND TO INFER THAT IT WAS THE PROBLEM OF GOODYEAR.

  10. I always love your H/N's when you have Kurt as #1 Hot! Now we just need to get Junior up there.

Woot! Team Penske was strong yesterday, had Sam's horsepower problem not happened, nor BK getting punted we would have had all 3 in top 10.

Edwards might get a fine for going backwards down pit lane but nothing else. NASCAR told drivers to solve it on the track and that is all he did. He is a jerk for doing it but he wont get sat...

  11. KRIS,

JUST CALL'EM LIKE I SEE'EM AND I THINK JR. MIGHT MAKE IT PART WAY BACK THIS YEAR.

YOUR RIGHT ABOUT OPIE AND I STILL LIKE HIM A BUNCH, BUT IN THIS CASE HE WAS WRONG. BUT THAT SAID I DON'T THINK THAT IS THE LAST TUMBLE BK IS GOING TO TAKE THIS YEAR, THE BOYS WILL PUT HIM IN HIS PLACE ONE WAY OR THE OTHER.

  12. Well, I have taken my time to think about what Carl Did. Now, I will say this and only this, what goes around comes around. Whether it was because Brad needed to be taught a lesson or not. That is not for me to say. But both drivers need to remember, a race car driver NEVER FORGETS.

Great blog Gunny and while I am not fan of Kurt Busch, I am thrilled that Steve Addington has found his place at Penske and is having success so soon. Congrats to Steve and his team.

  13. TSFAN:

REALIZING THAT YOU ARE COMPLETELY CORRECT IS WHAT WORRIES ME, THAT THIS WHOLE THING IS GOING TO SNOWBALL AND IN THE END SOMEONE IS GOING TO GET HURT REALLY BAD.

AND IT MAY NOT EVEN BE CARL OR BRAD.

  14. If Carl makes the chase, I look for Brad to pay him back then....especially if he has a shot of winning the championship in the last few races.

Or I wouldn't be suprised if Carl is 13th in points leading up to the Richmond fall race, and Brad pays him back then.
